The Real Low Down

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Dear Nia B,
What products are good for low porosity fine hair to keep in moisture and shine? Now that my relaxed hair is gone, I can't keep moisture in when I do wash n go's, twist-outs, etc.
Thank you.
Gloria McClain

Hi Gloria!
I have a few friends who have low porosity hair.  For them, it took a while to "get" what their issue was.  They used to ask me why did every product they use on their hair sit like birds on a telephone wire (OK, they didn't really say that last part, but that's how I envision the product sittin' on their hair!). At the time, I too didn't know it was due to low porosity, but was able to help them figure out what to do, so their hair absorbed and held on to the wanted benefits from the products they were using.

One thing I would suggest (if you aren't doing this already) is steaming your hair to help lift your cuticles and get some of the much needed moisture in your hair.  Try to use moisturizing conditioners with ingredients sure to add and lock in the moisture (I'll start a list of products for you at the end).  Also, since your hair is fine, try adding a little bit (or more - dependng on what you know your hair needs) of some 100% pure Argan Oil to damp, but not soaking wet hair after you rinse out your conditioner.  For those who do not have low porosity hair, it's suggested to rinse with cool water to close the cuticles, but in your case, your hair doesn't need this type of help.  Try using warm water as your final conditioner rinse and then add the Argan oil as I mentioned above.

As far as the list of products go, below are some suggestions.  I want to add that with any product you do chose to use on your hair, be sure you're emulsifying the product in your hands, and run your product filled hands down your strands a few times to really get the product in.

  1. Bee Mine BEE•U•Ti• FUL Moisturizing Deep Conditioner
  2. Oyin Handmade Honey Hemp Conditioner
  3. My Honey Child Olive You Deep Conditioner
  1. Argan Oil (100% pure certified  organic)
  2. Oyin Handmade Burnt Sugar Pomade
  3. Karen's Body Beautiful Super Duper Hydrating Cream (for fine hair, I'd reco only using a little bit)
  1. Karen's Body Beautiful Hair Nectar Leave-in Conditioner
  2. Kinky Curly Knot Today
  3. Giovanni Direct 50:50
This list is not in any order of preference.  There are many other products; this list is just to get the ball rollin'.

* One more tip I'd like to add is, if you have oil that works for your hair (i.e. jojoba, olive oil etc.), after you're done applying your products for a wash-n-go, add some oil to a spray bottle and lightly spritz your hair with the oil to lock in the moisture.
Well, that's all I got.;-)  Let me know how things work out and if you have any additional questions/comments, feel free to leave them below.

Does anyone else have low porosity hair?  Any tips on products etc. you can offer up?
