Mane Review: Cantu for Natural Hair Creamy Hair Lotion

Monday, August 27, 2012

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  I for one am glad to have partially kicked a nasty cold; I feel a million times better than I did a few days ago.

Today I want to tell you guys about a new product I tried.  A few weeks ago, I got an itch to try something new.  I had a few products in mind and finally narrowed my list down a bit.  So in my haste, I headed to Walgreens and was torn between two products.

 The Scoop
Every since I went natural, I've heard nothing but good things about the results people experienced from using  Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioner.  I also reached out to folks on Instagram asking why they liked it, and the #1 response was the moisture it delivered.  I've been interested in trying it, but was on the fence about one or two of the ingredients, but thought this day, "whatever" and decided to give it go.  However while in Walgreens, I came across the New Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Creamy Hair Lotion, and noticed the few ingredients I was concerned about in the Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioner, weren't in the Creamy Hair Lotion - BUT, I came to Walgreens to buy the Leave In Conditioner, so I was not completely sold on this new stuff!

One hour later, after opening both products, smelling each, examining their consistency, putting one down, picking the other one up (and repeating this process several times), I left Walgreens with 1.) The Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Creamy Hair Lotion and 2.) A heavy feeling of buyers remorse (because I did NOT come to the store for this!).

So I went home, did my normal hair routine, used the Cantu Shea Butter for Natural Hair Creamy Hair Lotion and sealed with KBB's Beauty Boss 101 and below is my story:

Creamy lotion type consistency.  This is how much I used per section (a bit more if I felt the need)

Day 1 hair.  All done!

Day 3 and still going strong!

The Mane Verdict

As the years have progressed, I've come to understand my hair and know pretty much what it will and won't like.  Sometimes, you think a product is going to work and the results are "aight" at best, and not worth a second investment of time and/or money.

I'm actually glad I took the chance on the Cantu Shea Creamy Hair Lotion!  I have nothing but good things to say about it and here's my list:
  1. The moisture is off the chain
  2. I like how light and fluffy and full my hair looks and feels
  3. I like the definition  - without the sacrifice of volume (best of both worlds for me!)
  4. I used it every 2-3 days to re-moisturize my hair.  Didn't need to, but did so more so out of habit
  5. No build up type feeling after using it for several days

I wanna hear from you all!  Have you tried the Cantu Shea Butter Creamy Hair Lotion?  What about the other products from them?

  2. Thanks Marcia! What did you do to your hair when you used the curling cream? Does it smell like the hair lotion?

  3. I've used the Cantu Leave-In Conditioning Repair Cream and stopped because my hair was becoming too dry. Maybe the ingredients changed. However, I may try the lotion.

    1. Yeah, the lotion was not drying at all for me. Interesting about the drying effect of the Leave-In though because the results I heard was either that it kept the hair extra moisturized or that some were left with dry hair. Hmmm, I'm going to have to research what ingredient is the one causing the dryness for some...

    2. Yes, the ingredients have changed! They added petroleum way down the list, so you may not have noticed.

  4. The reason the Leave-in treatment dries out a lot of curlies' hair (including mine)is because the leave-in has silicone in it. I can not use anything with silicone in it or my hair and scalp will be EXTREMELY dry! The lotion does not have silicone in it and that is why it isn't drying like the leave-in. Hope I've shed some light ladies!

    2. Yes ma'am you have - thanks!!! The other thing is that the silicone coats the hair and so when your hair feels dry and needs more moisture, if the silicone is not shampooed out, some may be unable to remoisturize because the silicone has placed a "shield" if you will, over the hair and locked anything additional from getting in.

  6. I love the Cantu Naturals activator cream as I don't use gels, it's great. I use that along with a spritz spray that I have from Butters n Bars. I don't use the activator every day but the curls remain. I want to try the Lotion too, good stuff from Cantu for natural hair.

  7. I've been using the Cantu Hair lotion now that I found it at Walgreens and I love it, I use the Activator Cream(found that at Walmart) on occasion but the Lotion is awesome, I get curls w/o the slimy feel on my hands from the activator although the activator doesn't leave that feeling on my hair. I tell you both of these are my staples now. Once again really good stuff from Cantu for naturals and the price is right.

    1. I don't know what happened, but my local Walgreens has stopped selling this! I'm going to talk the manager and am on the hunt for a new location.

  8. Yay I love your hair and the article. I got this in my Curl kit and love it! I was and have been on a long long hunt for a good hair lotion so I'm glad this was included. I've only used it once and I did get a little greasy handed but perhaps I put too much. Are you still using this product? How is it for long term? .

    1. I haven't used it in a while. I did notice for me after long term use, I didn't get the results I did the first time. I will use and purchase it again when I get that "itch" to try something new outside my regulars, but I don't think I'd use it as my everyday moisturizer, you know.
